As derby girls we all know how awesome a team can be. The support you get from your team on and off the track is something that is sacred to every derby girl. We do amazing things with our team that we could probably do on our own but the journey wouldn't be half as fun.

We belong to an Etsy team as well. The support and information that we share in Team Discovery makes life a little more fun and enjoyable while trying to sell in an online market.

I have asked one of my teamies for a little interview.
Jennifer from Creative Cabin happily stepped up to the job.

HAB: Tell us a little bit about yourself.

JEN: I am work at home mother of 2 boys, ages 6 and 8, as well as a devoted wife. I grew up in the Midwest and moved to NC in 2007. I have always longed to be in the mountain woods and am finally here. This to me is home.

HAB: What do you love about what you do?

JEN: Photographing nature is more of a hobby than a profession for me. I say this because I just love doing it and never think about if this shot will sell. I just love doing it. Being able to sell my photography is just a bonus that helps support the habit.
However, the photography in my shop is not mine alone. My husband shares the same love of nature photography as I do and the shop is a collection of what have both taken.

HAB: How did you first got involved in photography?

JEN: I have always enjoyed taking pictures but hated film cameras because I did not get the instant gratification of seeing what I just shot. But when I got my first little digital camera that held something like 10 pictures at 480x620 (lets just say really small), I was hooked.
I could see my shot and if I did not like the angle, I could take another one right then w/o losing the opportunity. I think that was back in 2000 or 2001.

As far as my husband is concerned, he says he can not remember what sparked his interests as a kid. Photography is just something he has always loved to do.

HAB: Please tell us quick history on how you got started on Etsy

JEN: I have known about Etsy for a few years. My mother actually found it and said I should make stuff to sell on there. At that time, I was not at a point in my life where that was an option.
But I held onto the thought of Etsy as a place to do something.
It was only last summer that I opened my web design shop, Bisi Designs, on Etsy.
Then I thought I would do crafting since Mom was still on my tail about selling crafts.
At first I started putting a few things in my design shop but it looked tacky to me so I created CreativeCabin131 in October and put some craft stuff there. That was a flop.

I am one of the leaders of Team Discovery. We have a few photographers on the team and after I saw them selling photography, I thought about it and said something to the hubby.
He said "I have been telling you we should sell our photography, so get to it!" And there it was, shortly before Thanksgiving, I ditched the crafting and listed some of our photographs.

HAB: What do you find most challenging about photographing nature?

JEN: Not having my camera with me when I see those perfect shots.
I always walk out of the house to head to town w/o the camera. I almost cried one day, it had been raining and on my way home, there is a ziggy-zaggy spot in the road. It was wet, the leaves were peaking in color and littered the road. There was a heavy fog and the road just faded away in front of me.

HAB: What do you do when you aren’t working on your photography?

JEN: I am also a web designer. I create websites and Etsy shop banners.

HAB: How did you pick nature as your main focus of your photography?

JEN: Nature is something we both truly love and admire. We have this deep drive to capture it.

We love to eat wild mushrooms so when we go out to find them, we take the camera.
Not everything we find is edible, nor can we identify, but if it looks interesting, we take its picture, same with wild flowers.
Our nature landscapes are really just one of those "Oh Wow!" moments that we feel we just have to capture.

HAB: If you could go anywhere in the world to take pictures, where would you go?

JEN: I would love to do underwater photography of the Great Barrier Reef but I would probably stop in Hawaii for some surfing first. Then I think I would have to pop down to Antarctica to visit the penguins. They are just some cool guys!

Slow Derbs

Slow derby, as much as we all would rather not see it, as derby players we all know that it can be pretty useful. To get people out of the penalty box, to waste some time when winning by a smaller margin or to slow down the pack. I also get annoyed when it becomes a strategy for a whole game. When you see two really great teams that can skate fast and slow and they are choosing slow for the whole game.
What also tends to be annoying is when one team is doing it and the other team allows it to happen.
I like to, if I'm at a loss in a game, to pretty much do the opposite of what the other team is doing. So if they start jostling and not moving forward, whether i know why they are doing it i want the jammers out and skating if only for the simple fact that the other team doesnt want thing this to happen.

There are many ways to stop the slow derby on the line.
If there is no pack after the first whistle the jammers will be released. So you can race forward as a team 10 ft. the jammers will be whistled off and you have a bit of time to fall back and get back into the pack so that you are able to hit the jammer again.

You can really play with this one a bit at practice and force your refs to make calls.
For example, if you continue skating forward and the other pack doesn't who are they going to call?
If it's the other team and you have a faster jammer you could hold the no pack for a little longer until your jammer gets past them, forcing some destruction penalties and hitting out of play penalties, and then falling back in time to make a pack to hit the opposing jammer. (obviously this works really well in my head! HA).

Another way to force the jammer whistle is to drop to a knee, no pack, the jammers are released. You stand back up and continue on as a normal jam. Once the jammers are out, the pack tends to move forward, as long as the jammers move forward.

As for games and fan enjoyment, I think that if you are playing a home game in front of your home crowd and you want your fans to have a good time, you want to use these strategies only in dire situations, for example jammers being in the penalty box, or two blockers in the penalty box. In inter league or home games, this is your bread and butter for your league, if you used the slow derby as much as they do in tournament play then you may find that you don't have many fans coming out to watch. Not good.

However, in Wftda ranked game play, these plays, to me, seem totally acceptable due to the huge prize at the end called WFTDA nationals where there is prize money on the line and sponsorships etc. Since it is allowable in the rules I would totally do any strategy that was working for me to get me to that prize. Cause seriously, no one is going to remember the boos when you have that big ol trophy in your hands and new skates your feet.

I could go on and on about my opinion on slow derby and the good vs bad but i wont!

Despite the claims that fast derby is better and more skilled I do know that good derby skaters need to know how to do both. I also know that it is a lot easier hitting people going fast and everything, to me, is easier faster but slow derby is definitely not easier derby as a blocker or a jammer.

The good people over at Frozen Coldbase made us, what looks like is going to be an exciting roller derby video game for the nintedo wii.
Just from the little clip alone it's a fast paced game full of whips and hits, a kick ass soundtrack and the voice of roller derby's beloved Dumptruck

With so many bouts and games and derby stuff going on, Sufferjet and myself, pulled an all nighter right before our game against the Hamilton Harlots and made some cool scarves for our refs and visiting refs. I just noticed it had been a month since posting.. So very bad of me. I do apologize, we are coming into our last few games of the season all at once so I have been super busy!

So to kick start my butt back in the blog I have interviewed Luludemon of the Terminal City Roller Girls and the designer of PIVOTSTAR clothing. Pivotstar is clothing designed for real roller derby women. Its alternative, athletic and helps you do what you do best - kick ass!

I was lucky enough to pick up one of her amazing purple zip up hoodies at the Beast of the East in Montreal. It fits amazingly and I love it! Unfortunately so does my daughter Syd. The minute I had it in the house I haven't had it on since, she only takes it off when I wrestle it off of her to wash it, then she immediately puts it back on before I have a chance to claim it back.

How did your business come about?:
I was working at Rollergirl.ca and realised that there was a lack of clothing created specifically for roller derby.
There was lots of fun, sparkly stuff out there that was great for bouting in, but nothing that I wanted to wear for those 9 hours of practice a week and then to the bar afterwards. So I decided to start a clothing line for real roller girls and 6 months later I am sending clothes to Switzerland, the North Pole and Hawaii!

Sports before roller derby: Snowboarding, Rollerblading (yup I was a fruit booter!) and Roller Hockey

When/how you first got involved with roller derby: I moved to Vancouver after I finished school in Edinburgh, Scotland and didn't know a lot of people in the city. I saw the TCRG on local TV and thought "that looks like a good way to meet some cool people" and joined up a month later. Now I have a whole new derby family that have seen me through a lot of changes over the past 4 years.

Best team derby moment: The first year I was captain for our All Star Team and a week before our big Derby Night in Canada Tournament I got appendicitis :-( I pleaded with the doctors to let me play, but when they mentioned "colostomy bag" I gave in. I ended up bench coaching the team and we won! It was great to see the team bring their A game, despite losing a player and I was so proud of them. I may have shed a tear ;-)

Best personal derby moment: Last year the All Stars played Bremerton. They have this amazing jammer called On da Sligh. We were jamming against each other and came out of the pack at exactly the same time, but she got lead jammer. I was skating right behind her and started bouncing around behind her trying to distract her and get her to focus on me rather than scoring points. It worked! She got mad, and threw on the breaks, trying to hit me. But I saw it coming and managed to jump around her and skate like crazy for the pack. She called it off, but she didn't score any points and it made me feel like a super hero! hahaa

What you do when you're not skating: Thinking about skating! It drives my boyfriend nuts. Oh and also dreaming up new Pivotstar products that derby girls wont be able to live without.

Favorite place in the world! Hoedspruit, South Africa. It's the small town where my sister and her husband live in a shipping container on a farm surrounded by giraffe, zebra and rhinos. It's a magical and serene place.

Guilty pleasures: I am addicted to bagels - especially at midnight snack time!

Tell us something you probably shouldn't: my mum still calls it "darby" like I am riding ponies or something.

Give us some advice: Jam smarter not harder. Remember you are the only one that can score points out there, so conserve your energy til you really need it, work with your blockers to progress in stages through the pack and avoid those hits. Also focus on the basic mechanics of skating as much as the strategy, it's amazing the difference learning to skate efficiently makes.

Who is your roller derby hero: oh god that's a really hard one, I have SO many! I would have to say at the moment it is Ginger Snap from Gotham. I took her pack work classes at the Blood and Thunder Boot camp and she was great. No b*shit, work hard, think on your feet and push yourself. This one drill we did called "Biggest Threat" left me covered in bruises, but it was so worth it.

Anything else you would like to say? I am constantly inspired by the stories of the roller girls around me. Everyone has their own mountains to climb and derby seems to attract some of the toughest, unyielding, fun loving climbers out there.

How to get Butts in the Seats! Part two.

This is part two of how to get people at your games. Part one explained the benefits of Word of Mouth and how important it is to go outside your circles and talk to everyone you meet about your great product you want to sell aka Roller Derby. Seriously, it is the best thing around so it shouldn't be a hard sell.

Email Bulletin

We started adding everyone we talk to on an email list. We also put out fan sign up lists at the merch booth and at the food/bar area at our bouts and fundraisers and such. We send out an event reminder to the list a month before the event and then re email it a week before. We only use this list to promote our fundraisers, which we only have one a year, and our bouts. We also email this group as soon as we have our season schedule. You don't want to over use this option, people will get angry if you spam them. Any other updates we do with our facebook pages, twitter and on our website.
This makes it easy for your fans to pass on the information in their email lists.

Let your email market your event.
Add a paragraph to your email signature to let people know about an upcoming event.

Featured Skater Mirambo #69 of the Forest City Derby Girls

Todays featured skater is none other then Forest City Derby Girls own Mirambo. If you were lucky enough to get a FCDG calendar she is also Miss August.

Mirambo is a big part of our league. She keeps the team together and does crazy things to keep the game light and to make sure everyone is having a good time. She is a hard hitter and a team player for sure. I sent her a bunch of questions and then asked her to pick a few.. she did them all! Lots of Mirambo to go around.

Sports before roller derby: wrestling team in High School.

When/how you first got involved with roller derby:
Like a lot of girls, I was reintroduced to derby when A&E aired Rollergirls The Series. I was sitting with a close friend and made an off hand remark that if they ever had derby in my home town I wouldn't hesitate to join. Well she saw a flyer for a practice a couple months later and basically told me to put my money where my mouth. Going on 5 years later I think I've proved I belong here.

There really has been so many, I am blessed to have some of the best teammates ever. But I'd have to say one of our more recent games. We were playing The Derby Debutantes from GTARD. It was G20 weekend and we were under the assumption that traffic heading into the city was going to be crazy so we all left way early. Got to the venue 5 hours before the hosting team was even scheduled to arrive at the arena. This left us with a lot of free time. I found a vending machine that had mustaches inside. Got enough for everyone on the team and we all picked one out. We laughed and joked around for hours, by game time we were just so relaxed from all the laughs and funny pictures all day long we played one of the best games ever as a team. I'd do anything for those girls xoxox

Best personal derby moment:
It was the last jam of our game against the Nickle City Knockouts. I knocked their jammer B.J. HARMstrong out of play, and forced her to cut in front of me back on the track. She was originally awarded the point for passing, giving them a one point lead for the win. Thank the derby god's I made eye contact with a ref during the infraction and the score was adjusted but only after the Knockouts had taken a winning lap. After some very heated discussion with the captains and the refs the score showed a tie game with the clock run out. Forcing an overtime jam. In the end we ended up winning the game. It was incredible.

What do you do when your not skating?
Well recently I've tried on a few different roles but still within the realm on derby. Reporting at games with Derby Spotlight. Roger Foley asked me to join his team and I just couldn't resist. And I also tried my hand at refereeing recently, that was very different for me. Making the calls instead of instigating them, was a lot tougher than I thought it was going to.

Favorite place in the world: In front of a mirror.

Guilty pleasures: Poutine, seriously I can't get enough. Just thinking about it now makes me salivate for it...

Give us some advice: Shit or get off the pot! You are your own worst enemy at practice, don't ever sit down not for anything. Get to know your skates, you are responsible for your own equipment. Without it you wouldn't be here so at least have enough mind to take care of it. And don't be a douchbag on the track, learn the rules ladies.

Who is your roller derby hero: There are so many really...Jess Bandit, they best pivot I've seen on the track yet. Crackerjack, really do I have to explain why she's on my list? Because she is AMAZEBALLS! And don't forget D-Bomb, that girl has got the most powerful legs I've ever seen.

Tell us something you probably shouldn't:
I have totally played games when I shouldn't have due to injury's. And I'll probably do it again.
(Mirambo just recently played a game with seven stitches in the bottom of her foot.)

Anything else you would like to say:
Just that I owe a lot of my skills to my amazing trainers Anya Face and Sufferjet. If it wasn't for those two ladies I wouldn't be half as good as I am. I love you both so much.

Mirambo is such a suck up! But we love her anyways!

How to get Butts in the Seats! Part one.

So you've trained really hard, and planned the bout and the bands and the after party is all set. All this work is wasted if you cant get people in the seats to see it.

My roller derby team does not like to spend money on anything. We want to keep money to put on more bouts. So I'm going to post some ways to get your fans at your event for as cheap as possible. The key to getting people to the bouts is that every derby girl in the league should be working their butts off to get the word out. Even if you have a person in charge of promotions, she should only be responsible for contacting media to set up interviews etc. Everyone in the league should be working in their own circles and as a group to get the information out to all ages and walks of life.

Roller Derby really is a sport for everyone so don't stay in your comfort zones, branch out and meet lots of people and promote your event and your sport.

Word Of Mouth

The first place to start is with your members, supporters and current fan base. Use your meetings, regular communications and newsletters to let them know about your event and encourage them to tell their friends and friends of friends. Word of mouth is still one of the most powerful selling tools because it also comes with a reliable, credible endorsement.

Past that you can talk to people on the street, people in line at the grocery store. Make sure you have hand bills or business cards with your website listed on you at all time. Get your friends and family excited about the event as well and they will tell their friends.

Tell people at your work, at the daycare, at the doctors appointments, your kids school, your nephews school, get your family and friends to do the same. Pretty much where ever you go you should find someone you can talk a little derby to.

Make a goal for yourself and get all the girls in the league to do the same. Whether you have a bout or not you should tell 5 people a week, or even a day if you can, about what your league is doing, or just getting your website out there for people to get some information and see what your league is all about.

In my experience, in roller derby, people always have questions about the sport and if you know the information and are excited about it they will be interested. If you can get them interested, give them the information, they will pass it on for you.

Doom Dee Doom. I hate to say it out loud and always get squeamish when people ask me what my derby name is. I even almost changed it after I had my baby to the first name I thought of , Sultry Confinement. For my very first bout I was Whip Lass because it fit the theme of the team I was on for our leagues exhibition season, then when we reformed our teams I changed it to Agent Orange Crush, but didn't check the roller girl roster first and it got spit back. I had about a week to come up with a new name, so Doom Dee Doom it is.

I have been playing for Duke City Derby since 2005, but took a short hiatus to have a baby, and upon starting derby again I skated for a few months for Rose City before moving back to Albuquerque. I am on the Dooms Dames at home and also on the Munecas Mueartas, our travel team.

Sports before roller derby

I was always the kid that got hit in the head with a basketball before roller derby, I thought I was uncoordinated and not very athletic. After starting roller derby I realized maybe I was just trying the wrong sports, after all some one who is 5'2" with massive muscular quads isn't really built for basketball, but I would have probably done well at soccer and I was made for derby.

When/how you first got involved with roller derby:

I started playing derby in 2005. Remember back when people used myspace instead of facebook? Well I reconnected with my best friend from elementary school that way. Her myspace name was Dahmernatrix, which I thought was funny and awesome so I asked her about it. She told me it was her roller derby name. Since I love roller skating I went to my leagues first bout of our exhibition season (we had an exhibition season before our first real season). By the time the next exhibition game came around I was on the "Dead Mans Curves". Roller derby has changed my life in unimaginable ways.

What you do when you're not skating

I have reached the point that I have more hobbies than I have time for. I am Married (to a ref) and have a sweet baby girl. I also have two etsy stores. I have a degree in fashion design and have been working on developing more sewn products for Caustic Threads. I also paint, screen print, draw, block print, needle felt, rock climb, hike, bike, and various other crafts.

Favorite place in the world!

So far, my favorite place that I have ever been is my home town. I have been to almost every state in the US and lived in Portland, LA and Savannah, Ga but something always brings me back home. I think it is the sunshine. I have never been off the continent. I would love to visit Paris, London, most of Italy, parts of Germany, the Netherlands... (list goes on forever)

I like cake. A LOT.

I will probably be retiring at the end of this season, as much as I love roller derby, I want to have another baby, and it was really hard to go back so much fatter and slower after I had my first baby, I do not think I can do it again.

A few months ago, when I heard that Georgia W. Tush was opening her own brick and mortar skate shop, the first thought in my head was, well it's about time!
Tush lives and breathes roller derby.

Before I knew much about her, I would see her everywhere, doing the things I was too scared to do.
Skating on Freemont street with Team Awesome, dancing half time shows at WFTDA Nationals, playing baddass rifts on inflatable air guitars at the karaoke bars in Vegas and playing some amazing roller derby all over the world.

She is very knowledgeable in the sport, she knows everyone, and she has pretty much done everything and always has a blast doing whatever it is she is doing.

So, this weekend in Montreal is the grand opening of Neon Skates! If you are in the area, or wanna go on a road trip, plug 23 Bernard O. (local 23) Montreal QC in your GPS, grab some snacks and hit the road. The Store hours are Tuesdays to Saturday 12pm to 6pm.

If there is something you need, she will find it for you! If you have questions, she can answer them!
She is going to be doing mail order in the future for those of us not lucky enough to live in Montreal.

Step Moms - You hate us and we beat you!

This weekend, Sufferjet and myself, travelled down to Toronto once again, to play some roller derby.

We took Dawn Kashane, and our five rookies and seven fresh meat, aka never played a game before, gave them some bright freaking yellow and baby blue shirts and threw them to the wolves. The wolves being The Rollergettes.

The Step moms really stepped it up! The jammers listened well, played smart and really worked hard! They just kept skating, and skating hard, even in the ridiculous heat. The blockers worked extremely well together. The freshies really listened to the rookies and they even pulled off some advanced plays that we had just been introducing. It was great to see that our training program is really paying off. Sufferjet and myself we screaming, and laughing and maybe, just possibly, a little crying! We were just so proud of all these girls. Every single on of them had a shining moment or ten.

Plus! I didn't even have to get my ridiculously awesome yellow shirt a bit sweaty. They were able to do it with only Sufferjet and myself coaching from the sidelines. They were able to finish the whole game, all of them as a team. The final score 189 - 24! Go Step Moms!

Thanks to the Rollergettes for having us down and showing us a good time and a big thanks to Ref Ormed Rebel, Mirambo, Commiekaze, Killson, Back Alley Sally and Scarlet Fox for coming out and helping with reffing and stats. Also a big thank you to all the fans and members of the Forest City Derby Girls that came out to either watch and show their support or help out where ever we needed them.

Mustache Envy

On June 26th, the Thames Fatales, went to Toronto to take on the Derby Debutantes. Due to the G20 Summit we were told that we should get there super early cause there would be long delays and lots of traffic. The game started at 7, we left around noon, we got there at 2.

What to do in the rain in a closed down city?

Have some good times!

Mirambo found a bubble gum machine that gave out mustaches . All styles of mustaches! We were able to snaggle one for everyone out of the machine.

We put them on and giggled most of the day. We wore them in the change room, and then we wore them for our intro. So much fun, we looked absolutely ridonkulous. After the intro, we took them off and stuck them to the outside of our bench. Every thing was fine until about half way through the first period, I was skating with Jemicide and Annie Takers on my line, I saw jemicide go in for one of her beautiful hits, she pushed off on her skate and crumpled to the ground. Annie Takers was having an unusually hard time keeping up for that jam. The jam ended and they were cursing. They both had skated the whole jam with a mustache stuck to their wheel. Bad Pit had to confesscate the mustaches.

The next day Sufferjet made some mustache underwears! Check them out, they are pretty funny,
and they wont get stuck to your wheel when you skate!

I was reading my new Five on Five magazine and I came across these cool wrist guard covers.
They are available from the OC Roller Girls website. They come in super hero style, leopard print, camo, skulls, and golden and blue. I think they are super awesome.

These ones are my favourite. I have some wonder woman styled hot pants by Knicker Rocker on Etsy and added with these rocking wrist guard covers would be superheroliscious!

For 32.99 US you can look like a super hero, and you would probably skate like one too. There are 6 styles to choose from and each one is reversible. So if you don't have your super hero hot pants on you can flip them inside out and go incognito.

Fun Roller Derby Stuffs from the Internet!

Is your league having a Bake Sale? Are you having a Garage Sale and want to add a treats table to it?

Is there derby girls with bdays that need a treat? I came across some sites that offer roller skating cookie cutters. These would be awesome to have to sell cookies at bouts, bake sales, garage sales, fundraisers.

This one looks like the riedel-type roller derby skate. It is available from Kitchen Collectibles for 12.95. They would be super fun to decorate and I'm sure if someone else other then me baked them they would be very yummy.

This next one is more the old school roller skate boot. Super cute and retro.

It is available through Copper Gifts for 12.95 US.

I'm sure you could make your skate look better then this one. And if you need a cookie of a lady with a big nose and a bump on her head, then you can flip it around and do that. Ha, there are examples on the website.

Here is another higher boot, big wheeled roller skate. Because its an aluminum cutter it is super cheap at .76 cents. regularly 6.50. It is available from Outdoor Gear Site. At that price you could get one for the each girl in the league and go into high powered production.

Tired of cookies? How about some chocolate skates on a stick? MMMMMM this is available from the UK for 3.95. Check out Cakes, Cookies and Crafts to purchase.

If you don't want to purchase any roller skate cutters but still wanna make a roller skate cookie apparently you can take an upside down/backwards "L" cookie cutter and then add two circles of dough at the bottom. Other options would be a circle and make a wheel. Jammer Stars. etc.

I will not be partaking in any of these however because my baking, cooking, making anything passed a peanut butter sandwich or chopping vegetables is beyond me.

I leave all the yumminess up to my friend and fellow derby girl Dawn Kashane. She makes me the yummiest food and keeps me work in it off on the track!

Where the Forest City Derby Girls go, so does Hot Across Buns!

This Saturday we will be in Hamilton taking on Hammer City Roller Girls Death Row Dames. The last time we played this team we lost in the last jam by a few points. This is sure to be a tough game for both teams, which usually means an awesome game for fans!

We are strapping on our skates the following weekend to take on GTA Roller Girls, Derby Debutantes on their home turf. Although, last year, we were the harder hitting team and beat the Debs, they have been everywhere and are really coming together as a team, this again will not be a game to miss.

Anya Face - Captain of the best derby team eva! ha!

Super Sweet makes their debut in Montreal

We made up a team of skaters called Team Super Sweet, more on the actual team in a later post, but, our first game and really our first time skating together was against one of the best teams in Canada. We travelled down to Montreal, to take on Les Filles du Roi. We drank meters of beer, tried on ridiculous shoes, swam in a roof top pool, and got schooled, yet again by Les Filles in a 214-66, i think, finish.
It was a great weekend and we would totally do it again!

This was the meter of beer. I think they called it 3 liters but a meter sounds so much better! It was a great end to a long drive. We stumbled back to our hotel after and promptly went to sleep.

These were the shoes Mirambo was in love with! When we told her to go and try them on, we didn't realize that they were 700 dollars or that they would have to go in the vault to get her size. Ha ha.

Roof Top POOL!! So happy it was a nice weekend so we could swim in it!

It was a great weekend and I can't wait to play with the Super Sweet ladies again, hopefully really soon!

So while Sufferjet is at home, printing up some more hotpants and whipping up some new uniforms for The Thames Fatales, I thought i would throw on some more undies that we have created lately.

We currently only sell the one style of hot pant but we are going to be bringing in other styles of bottoms as well as different items of clothing shortly.

Well Sufferjet and myself have been keeping the heat press hot!!!

Sufferjet has been elbows deep in vinyl. I have been getting hand cramps from promoting.

New Place to Buy Skates! Hot Diggity!

This weekend, Toronto, Ontario will be getting its own brick and mortar skate shop!! Sooo effing exciting.
Normally when i want new stuff i have to get it online, normally from Sin City Skates, Roller girl or Rollerbug.. Whom I love all of those girls! Fast shipping, great customer service! Otherwise I can pick up stuff at different events, normally when im out of the country and I always have to ask myself, do I buy wheels or buy margaritas, margaritas usually win out! HA HA

But this weekend Cardinal Skate Co. is opening! This means that when im in Toronto, seeing TORD games and GTAR games, or eating thai food and watching 24 with Joker I can hit the skate shop, smell the wheels, touch the bearings and try on skates!

Cardinal is a subsidiary of Common Ground Shop/RollerBug Skate Co, so it is run by the same people that bring you Roller Bug skates. I got my second pair of skates, my first pair of roller derby skates, from Rollerbug. They have stood up really well since i bought them three or more years ago! Plus they look pretty baddass!!! My skates have gotten more media attention then my face has! HA HA

I had a couple of teammates find these wheels from Queen of the Rink and they couldn't find them in Canada. I contacted Kandy Barr and she was able to order them in and the girls can go down and pick them up. Word on the street is they are also going to have ATOM wheels there!! ooooo i so wanna try those wheels.

So even though i am poor as eff, i do have a brand new credit card that will hopefully get me some wheels, new pads, and maybe skates, even though i looooves my old ones.

So if your in Toronto for the weekend or maybe you signed up for the latest TORD Fan Choice Scrimmage, make sure you stop in and talk derby with Kandy Barr at Cardinal!

Results of the Cougars vs Cubs

So Cougars totally got their tails handed to them by the Cubs.
Meh, I wasn't too concerned. It was just fun to play with new girls and girls that i have played with before, but not for a while.

Plus i got to make me some fancy hot pants for the game.
Mine said "Cat's Meow" Sufferjet's said "Hot Across Buns" I forgot to take pictures of them.. but will. Promise!

I loves me some Black and White scrimmaging. I think the next one is in March. Since my leg strappy thinger i bought didn't work for my knee I will have to go out in March and try my next idea. Drugs. HA HA.

Anyways, I stole some pictures that Adam Swinborne had taken at the game. I hope he doesn't mind.

Im in Love..

I'm In Love.. With the Black And White Scrimmage.

This weekend, Sufferjet, Back Alley Sally, Mirambo and myself are off to Toronto to play some roller derby. We signed up as Cougars, in a Cougars vs Cubs game. I love playing with people that are not on my team or in my league just as much as I love playing with my team. It's a little more challenging, you don't know how those other people play and you have to figure out what they are going to do or what they want you to do as quickly as possible. All teams play differently. All players play differently.

These pick up games make you more versatile and keep you on your toes and from getting stagnant. Sometimes at practice, you are always playing with the same people so you tend to do what works to that person. You know how they are going to hit, you know how to block them. But at the black and white scrimmage you are not only playing against people you don't normally play against you are also playing with people that you are not used to playing with.

So I am excited to strap on the skates and meet and play with and against new skaters! Go Cougars!

For The Love Of Hot Pants -Assograms

I have more hotpants then i have underpants. Its an addiction really. I know i have more hot pants then games to play. I sometimes sign up for extra practices and scrimmages just so i can wear that new pair of hot pants. Since i am jobless i wear hotpants all day! Everyday, I am fully prepared for a pants off dance off party! Life is good when you gots some hotpants on!

Where do i find so many hot pants? All over! Mostly online or i get sufferjet to heat me up a pair of assograms.

The first pair of hot pants I'm am going to feature is, of course, our own!

so here is THE ASSOGRAM

There is nothing more exciting then taking a pair of american apparel underwear and putting your own wording on it. We are signed up to play a Cougars vs Cubs game with ToRD next weekend and we are already getting giddy as to what to put on our bums!

How do we wear our panties? Well we take a pair of tights or leggings and then maybe a pair of fishnets and throw our undies on over top! Add a pair of leg warmers or high socks and the look is complete.

Forest City Derby Girls Party

So we finally got christmas out of the way and could continue on with the scheduling of our 2010 season and have our first official party of 2010. We decided instead of the regular awards we would give out cheeky awards suited to the recipient for what they accomplished in the 2009 season or as a rememberance of funny things that did happen. The girls recieved panties they could wear on the track with an assogram.
A great time was had by all and we didn't get kicked out even though it got a little messy. Thanks Big City Bistro!

We also took this chance for the Thames Fatales to meet and mingle with all the Fresh Meat that is currently skating on Tuesdays. It was really fun to see all the newbies joining in with the shenanigans that went on.
I even got Dawn Kashane's special birthday cupcakes.. mmmmm soo yummy!

Now its back to business, planning fundraisers, booking games and training hard!

Keepin' the press hot~ Sufferjet

Party Time Excellent!

I am pretty excited to party it up for our end of year/beginning of season Partay with my roller derby team!

Woo Hoo, it seems like we are constantly playing and promoting and we never have time to party as a team.

I am really excited for this season. Last year, we amalgamated two of our teams into one and one third of our team after that was all new girls. So not only were we training girls and getting the two teams meshing well as one we were all trying to work together as a team and become friends and respect each other. It was tough, especially as the captain of the Thames Fatales, I was learning how everyone thought, expressed themselves, explaining to them how I worked as a person and working with everyone so that we could understand each other as players in a game and how to respect each other as people. In the beginning of the season it was a little dramatic but i think by mid season we were all able to appreciate our strengths, except our own and each others weaknesses and be open and honest with each other so that we could work on them as a team.

So now its party time. A chance to regroup outside of practice. Sufferjet and myself made up some awards for our teammates which are not the regular awards, more of a fun way to remember this year and work towards a great 2010 season. I will post some pickys after the party.

Some Talented People Pt 1

I have been actively promoting our little baby store and i come across some very talented people.
Which reminds me of the wonderful people that help me and my league out! Whether it be logos, or posters or store headers or websites.

The first person i would like to showcase is a very dear friend of mine. James Riehl.
We have pretty much grown up together and i think Jamie is one of the nicest people i have ever met. He is also one of the most talented. He has even drawn me two tattoos that are on my body right now.

With the help of his very talented girlfriend, Janet McGlynn, He has made my roller derby league many posters that help draw huge crowds at our bouts. We were able to get our posters into very busy corporate stores, which normally, we would have to contact head office and get permission. But the managers running the stores put them up anyways on actually seeing the poster.

They really are pieces of art instead of simple flyers. I actually get very excited when i see the work he has done and it makes me want to flyer for hours to show it off. I love when you hand a flyer to someone on the street and they have absolutely no interest in what you are trying to sell them, they catch a glimpse of the image, their hand goes out and although they are saying no, they actually take the flyer and start asking you questions about roller derby. I love it!

We are also able to take those posters and put them on shirts for sale at our bouts.
The first run of t shirts we got made from the Skate of the Dead poster, we got 80 shirts made and sold all but 15 at the bout.

He is just an amazing friend and artist. I have had incredible good times with him and i can always count on him if i need someone to talk to. He is the first person i would call if i had a bucket of slushie drinks in my freezer! hee hee.

This is my first post! So exciting and scary. hee hee.
This blog is mostly to promote our business, Hot Across Buns.

We started this business about two years ago. Sufferjet and myself are roller derby girls and we play for the Forest City Derby Girls, out of London Ontario.

Every year, they have a roller derby convention in Las Vegas, called Rollercon. About 1000+ derby girls from all over the world get together and train, play games and drink, 1 dollar margaritas. A bunch of girls from our league went down. Amongst the drinking and the skating and the dancing. I took a course about merchandising. The guy running the course was talking about heat presses. I took the course, ran to find Sufferjet and told her we had to get one.
Sufferjet gave me the look, the one i have grown quite used to seeing, the your nuts look. About two weeks after we came home, Sufferjet calls and says i found your heat press, and we bought it. Not thinking of going into business, but mainly to just put our name and number on all our shirts!

So, we started doing our names and numbers, and then the rest of the girls in the league wanted their stuff done, then Sufferjet did some bowling leagues and wedding party shirts. We didn't really have to free time to play with it too much with all the derby stuff we do.

Fast forward to last February, we were at another training camp in San Diego, Blood and Thunder. After a gruelling and amazing day of skating, we were looking at the merch the lady was making with her heat press. I told Sufferjet i would be right back, I was just going to get a drink. I come back to the merch table and Sufferjet is behind the counter, making the merch. I start laughing, and ask her what the heck was she doing? She looks at me, and says, "We need a cutter."
So we got a cutter! Still, we had not really done too much with it, except for league merch, and some funny stuff for ourselves.

Then i got a lay off from work. Home with nothing to do, we decided to open our Etsy shop.
Its just a baby shop. We are still looking for the best deals on clothing, supplies, etc.
Figuring out how to work the computer programs, drinking slushy drinks, and coming up with ridiculous things to put on pretty much anything.

So this blog will be about our adventures in derby, the crazy stuff we make, and other stuff we think is prrty cool.
